Stepladders

The following topics cover the main points to consider when using stepladders. Note that stepladder accidents are the number one cause of serious accidents in the home.

While the information contained in the following pages is helpful, it is by no means exhaustive. Use caution and common sense and follow these rules as a minimum:

1 - Common stepladder designs There are many different designs of stepladder available from small ‘step stools’ to larger stepladders and combination designs which can be converted into extending ladders. Choose the type you are likely to use most often - if you need a special type of stepladder it can be hired. Do not be tempted to use a stepladder not suited for a particular job.

2 - Always use the correct size It is very important never to use a stepladder that is the wrong height for the particular task you wish to perform. In particular, using ladders that are too short and over-reaching while standing precariously on the top is a major cause of serious accidents. Equally, using ladders that are too long and placing them at too low an angle can cause excessive loads on the ladders or slipping of the ladder feet.

3 - Safety checks before use Check that there is no damage to any part of the stepladder, particularly the stiles (the outside uprights) the steps or the top platform. Check that the rubber or plastic non-slip feet are all secure and that the steps are all clean and dry. Make sure that your footwear is clean and dry also, with a non-slip sole. See next step for more detail.

4 - Using the correct footwear Wear the appropriate footwear to avoid falls; always wear flat, firm-soled shoes. Never work in high heels, bare feet or slippers. Check that there are no overhead hazards near where you are going to work.

5 - Preparation Check that the stepladder is locked into its correct position. Rest it on a firm and level base. All four feet should be equally loaded. Position it so that the front of the ladder faces your work area. Never place it side-on to the work area as the ladder is far less stable in this position

6 - While on the stepladder Always keep a secure grip on the ladder and never have more than one person on it at any one time. Always keep both feet on a step. Never stand on the top handrail to gain extra height and never over-reach as this may unbalance you.

7 - Regular maintenance Always keep your stepladder protected from the weather in a covered, ventilated area. Never hang it vertically from one of its steps as this will damage the ladder.
